A dental emergency can be frightening, painful, and happen at the most inconvenient times. From a sudden, severe toothache to a knocked-out tooth, the one thing you need is fast, compassionate, and reliable care.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
If you're in pain or have a problem that could get worse without immediate care, it's a dental emergency. Call us right away if you experience:
-
A severe, persistent toothache
-
A cracked or broken tooth
-
A knocked-out permanent tooth
-
A loose permanent tooth
-
A lost filling or lost crown
-
An abscess (a painful, pimple-like swelling on your gums)
-
Significant bleeding from the mouth
What to Do in Common Dental Emergencies
Here are a few steps you can take before you get to our Lakewood dental office:
For a Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently floss the area to remove any food that might be trapped. Never put aspirin or any painkiller directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek can help with swelling.
For a Cracked or Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there's swelling, apply a cold compress to your face. Try to save any large pieces of the tooth and bring them with you.
For a Knocked-Out Tooth
This is the most time-sensitive emergency!
-
Find the tooth. Hold it ONLY by the crown (the chewing part), not the root.
-
If it's dirty, gently rinse it with water. Do not scrub it or use any soap.
-
If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket. Hold it in place by gently biting down on a piece of gauze.
-
If you can't put it back, transport the tooth in a small cup of milk or your own saliva.
-
Call us immediately. The best chance of saving the tooth is within the first 30-60 minutes.
