Living in Lakewood and Littleton means enjoying the beauty of the Rockies, but the higher altitude and dry mountain air present some unique challenges for your oral health. Many Colorado residents don't realize that the "Mile High" climate can actually increase your risk for certain dental issues.
1. The Battle Against Dry Mouth
Colorado is famous for its low humidity. When the air is dry, your mouth often follows suit. Saliva is your mouth's natural defense mechanism; it washes away food particles and neutralizes the acids produced by bacteria. Without enough saliva, you are at a higher risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
- The Raines Tip: Always keep a reusable water bottle handy (standard Colorado gear!) and consider a humidifier in your bedroom at night to help your mouth stay hydrated while you sleep.
2. "Tooth Squeeze" (Barodontalgia)
If you enjoy hiking or skiing at higher elevations, you might have experienced sudden tooth pain during a quick ascent or descent. This is caused by air pockets trapped in old fillings or untreated cavities expanding and contracting with pressure changes. If you feel a "squeeze" in your teeth while heading up to the mountains, it's a sign that an underlying issue needs attention.
3. Increased Sun Exposure
With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, our lips are constantly exposed to intense UV rays. This increases the risk of lip cancer and premature aging.
- The Raines Tip: Use an SPF-rated lip balm and ask us about our Liplase treatment, which can help rejuvenate and protect the delicate tissue of your lips using natural collagen stimulation.
